Hello there journal.
I must admit that today was a rather interesting day. It started off badly though. Instead of watching a rerun of ANTM marathon, I atttended support group. And you know how I dislike it with a passion. Look on the bright side, atleast my mum is happy now since she forced me to go. Support group today was extremely different.
How? Well we did the same old boring stuff except I met a boy not much older than me that wasn't too boring himself ;) His name is Augustus Waters. He told me to call him Gus but I prefer calling him by his full name, just like how he does with mine. For once, he is somebody that doesn't just sit around and moan about their cancer story but is proud of how it has made them the person they are today.
Augustus Waters is one in a million. I can't wait to go to the next support group! Guess it isn't so bad after all! Oh and about the rest of my day you may ask, journal? Well lets just say I couldn't stop thinking about Augustus.
That's all for now.

2.Symbolism and Imagery
One of the most obvious symbols/imagery in TFIOS is cigarettes. The main character, Augustus Waters, simply puts them in between his lips but doesn't light them. I quote from the novel "They don't kill you unless you light them. And I've never lit one. It's a metaphor you see: You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing.".
Or for a clip from TFIOS Movie click here.
The cigarette symbolizes how as human we have the power over our own body to choose what kills it and what doesn't. Another example of the cigarettes could be consuming fast foods etc. To Augustus Waters, he enjoys his cigarettes as for once he can finally control what kills him as he managed to survive cancer.
Besides that, "The Heart of Jesus" is used by Hazel to describe the Support Group she attends regularly. I quote from the novel, :So here's how it went in God's heart: The six or seven of ten of us walked/wheeled in…". She explains how everyone in the Support Group feels reassured and comforted at the thought of it but to Hazel she finds the Support Group very depressing and weird.
Encouragements is another imagery in TFIOS.
When Hazel Grace
visits Augustus' home, the first thing that meets her eye is all the encouraging quotes hung on nearly every wall in his house. Quotes like "Home Is Where The Heart is" seems to comfort and reassure Augustus' parents but to Gus and Hazel, they find it weird and actually hilarious. However, when Gus dies, Hazel mentions these encouragements in her speech as she knows they comfort his parents. The encouragements simply show how everyone has their different type of comfort and reassurance.
3. Soundtrack for the novel
Click on the purple bold to link to the song!
Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran
About how love is just a personal and powerful thing that people share amongst each other. And this song is about a person that is in need of love and care just like Hazel in the novel. So this song perfectly describes her situation as she met Augustus and fell in love.

Skinny Love by Birdy
Say Something by A Great Big World
Flaws by Bastille
This song is about flaws ( the title). Due to cancer, Augustus had to chop off one of his legs so now he has a prosthetic (fake) leg. And due to Hazel's cancer, she has weak lungs making her carry around an oxygen tank wherever she goes as well as having hair loss which explains her short boy cut hair. This song by Bastille tells us how all of us have flaws and that we should be proud of them.

Rather Be by Clean Bandit
Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift
If I Die Young by The Band Perry
This song describes thoughts and emotions one might have if they are young, knowing that they are at risk of dying soon. This describes the feelings of Hazel, Augustus and the many other cancer patients.

Yellow By Coldplay
All of Me by John Legend
This song describes how madly in love Hazel and Augustus are. Despite their differences and troubles both of their presence means the world to one another. Neither one of them could even bare at the thought of living without the other.

Human by Christina Perri
I chose this song as like the lyrics say "I'm only human". This relates to the cancer patients in TFIOS as they are only human and they shouldn't be looked down upon. They may have cancer but they aren't going to let it get in the way of them living the rest of their life the way they want it to and to enjoy it!

4. Cartoon Characters
A cartoon character that I think represents Augustus Waters is Disney's Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story. Both Gus and Buzz are good looking and have a similar personality. Both of them have the same mindset that is anything is possible hence Buzz Lightyear's famous phrase , "To infinity and beyond!". Buzz and Gus are caring, thoughtful and helpful. Although both fictional characters show these through different acts, they are still very similar. And this is why I think Buzz Lightyear is a cartoon character that represents Augustus Waters.
A cartoon character that represents Hazel Grace Lancaster is Disney's Rapunzel from the movie Tangled. Rapunzel and Hazel are both kept at home for two different reasons. They are both extremely down to earth and not pretending to be somebody they are not. Rapunzel and Hazel are very shy until they meet a special someone who teaches them to open up. For Rapunzel, she gets to explore the world with Flynn rider while Hazel meets Augustus who helps her gain her self-confidence. This is why i think Rapunzel represents Hazel.
Cartoon characters that represent Hazel's parents in TFIOS are Mr and Mrs Incredibles from Disney's the Incredibles!
Why do I think so?
This is because Hazel's parents have gone through alot having to deal with their daughter's cancer and all its side effects. They are strong and this tests their caring. In the movie the Incredibles, Mr and Mrs Incredibles also had to deal with their son getting
into trouble at school and their shy/alienated daughter. Both set of parents are determined, strong willed, caring, passionate and loving.

Hazel Grace. I am writing this note as I came around but you seemed to be out with your mum according to your father's words. Tomorrow get ready by 10 as I will come to pick you up to go for a picnic. Why? Well, I shall let that creative and bubbly mind of yours wonder but trust me, it'll be the best picnic in the picnics of all picnics. And have you finished reading an Imperial Affliction yet? Do call me as soon as your read this note. I would love to hear your charming voice as I have quite frankly missed it an awful lot. So tomorrow, ten, you, my gorgeous girlfriend and me your amazing boyfriend shall embark on our picnic!
Love,
